Vimalakirti Sutra

The Vimalakirti Sutra is different from most other sutras in that the main character is not Buddha or a monk, but the layman Vimalakirti, who is shown to be a Bodhisattva and to have spiritual attainment equal to or better than many of Buddha's ordained disciples. This Sutra serves as an encouragement to laypeople that the highest levels of spiritual attainment are not reserved for monks and nuns, but are open equally to laypersons.

It has been a popular Buddhist text throughout Asia for over two thousand years. It is a Mahayana sutra which extols the wonderful qualities of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and gives a vivid view of the vast expanse of reality seen through the eyes of enlightenment. It presents the main tenets of the Mahayana in a style that is concise yet uses vivid dramatic and humorous episodes. It makes clear the distinctions between the Individual Liberation path and the Bodhisattva path, and it has eloquent expositions of emptiness and non-duality.

The text being covered for the Feb 11-12 retreat is:
"The Vimalakirti Sutra"
Two versions are suggested:
Burton Watson's edition is recommended - available in book-stores;
& Robert Thurman's translation is available on-line

The retreat will consist of commentary on this text, meditation sessions, question and answer sessions, and opening and closing prayers.
It will be held in a classroom setting. Chairs will be available. Bring your own cushion if you want to sit on the floor.
